Anyone travelling on Highway 1 towards Alberta this weekend should prepare for an additional day with full closures lasting up to two hours.

At the end of March, BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said work would begin on the finishing touches of phase four of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project.

That resulted in Hwy 1 being reduced to one lane in each direction, which will last until the end of June.

At that time the Ministry warned of occasional full closure lasting two hours at a time on April 3, April 15, April 29, May 13, June 10, June 11, June 24 and June 25.

However, on Thursday the ministry said there would also be two hour periodic closures between 9 am and 3 pm on Monday, April 22.

The highway will be open for one hour after each closure to clear traffic.

The 5-7 am closure on April 29 has been cancelled, but the two-hour periodic closures between 9 am and 3 pm, with an hour in between to clear traffic, will proceed as planned.

The closure schedule is subject to change and travellers can stay up to date on the situation by visiting the project’s website.
