The BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) is investigating a horrific incident that took place in the West Kootenays this past weekend.

On Sunday night, a cow elk was unlawfully killed and then dragged behind a truck for approximately five kilometres.

The BCCOS says it was poached in the community of Krestova and dragged throughout the community behind a light-coloured pickup truck, possibly through New Settlement as well.

“It was eventually discarded on a road in Pass Creek near Castlegar,” said a statement from the BCCOS.

“The suspects did not take any meat, and the entire elk ended up unsalvageable,” the post added, noting that images of the elk were too graphic to share.

One Facebook commenter, who lives in the area, commented on the BCCOS Facebook post saying that the animal was dragged behind the truck with a rope around its neck.

“They took her just below my home in Krestova and dragged her all the way from Upper Krestova and dumped her on Tower Road just off Passcreek Road,” they explained.

“You can still see the blood trail on the road.”

There was no shortage of anger from other commenters on the BCCOS Facebook post and it’s hoped that someone else in the area may have seen something on Sunday night as well.

Whoever was involved in the incident could be facing numerous charges and anyone with information is asked to call the 24-hour BCCOS report hotline at 1-877-952-RAPP.
