As many communities across the BC Interior continue recovering from spring freshet flooding, the provincial government announced an additional funding to support local emergency operations centres.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness announced a nearly $3 million boost through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF).
Emergency operations centres (EOC) are activated and are a hub where local staff gather to coordinate responses to natural disasters and other emergencies. They also host recovery efforts such as being the first place where evacuees can register for support.
The funds can be used for purchasing and installing equipment and supplies to maintain or improve the centres. The funding will also support training and exercises to support staff in increasing capacity.
Nearly 80 projects in more than 100 communities are expected to benefit from the funds.
The latest round of funding builds upon a $180 million announced in February.
“We know significant costs are associated with emergency planning, mitigation, response and recovery for communities – including at local emergency operations centres,” said Bowinn Ma, minister of emergency management and climate readiness.
“These projects made possible through our Community Emergency Preparedness Fund will help better protect and keep people safe in the event of an emergency.”
