Travellers will be happy to know that the latest full closure of the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) between Golden and the Alberta border will end before the long weekend.

The month-long scheduled closure comes to an end at noon on Friday and the highway will be fully open for the duration of the long weekend.

It will be a big relief to those who will want to take the route on what is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

For the last month, motorists have been forced to take a 90-minute detour through Radium Hot Springs by using Hwy 93 and Hwy 95.

Unfortunately, the closures will resume after the long weekend, but there will not be another extended full closure of the highway this summer.

Starting at noon on Tuesday, May 24, the closure schedule will be as follows:

These evolving closures of Hwy 1 east of Golden are due to the ongoing, massive Kicking Horse Canyon Project.
