Construction on a community centre near Merritt has been halted after human remains were found.

On Tuesday, the Upper Nicola Band, located south of Kamloops, notified its community that construction crews found the remains at the site of the future Quilchena Community Centre.

According to a notice posted by band officials, the RCMP were contacted immediately and it was determined that the remains are “not recent.”

“Protocols to provide safety for the remains have been implemented,” the band says.

According to the notice, an archaeologist involved in the community centre project is supporting the Upper Nicola Band in this work.

A community meeting is behind held on Thursday to discuss the next steps.

More details are expected to be released after community members meet this week.

Construction on the community centre just began in late April after more than three years of planning work.
