According to police, initial evidence from the scene indicated that the driver of an SUV was travelling eastbound when it crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a logging truck coming the other way.

Unfortunately, the driver of the SUV did not survive. The driver of the logging truck was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"Investigators have determined that there was no criminality involved," said Cpl. Alex Bérubé. "The investigation remains with the Golden RCMP and the BC Coroners Service."

Police are still working to notify the SUV driver's next of kin and, as a result, no further information will be released at this time.

(UPDATE: June 15 @ 1:15 pm): The highway has now reopened.

Motorists have been urged to drive carefully and expect delays.

(Original story: June 15 @ 7:35 am): Hwy 1 has been closed between Field and Golden due to a major vehicle incident.

The incident occurred within Yoho National Park, DriveBC explained.

Crews are assessing the site now.

DriveBC urged motorists to use an alternative route.
