(UPDATE: Aug. 3 @ 5:33 am): Hwy 3A has now reopened between Keremeos and Kaledan Junction.

Motorists have been warned to expect limited visibility due to smoke, however.

Traffic control is also to be expected, DriveBC said.

A detour is still available for those who wish to take it, via Hwy 3 and Osoyoos.

The road was closed because of the danger presented by the Keremeos Creek wildfire.

In a bulletin posted on Tuesday, BC Wildfire Service said its crews had been implementing "small scale" ignitions along the highway.

"Crews will use a hand ignition technique and structure protection crews will protect power poles and mitigate impacts to the highway," the agency explained.

"The purpose of this is to bring the fire down to a pre-existing control line by removing unburnt fuel between the fire perimeter and Highway 3A. This will also help minimize spotting potential."

(Original story: Aug. 2 @ 11:39 am): Hwy 3A has been closed in both directions due to the Keremeos Creek wildfire.

DriveBC said there is no estimated time for the road’s reopening.

The closure is between Keremeos and Hwy 97 (Kaledan Junction).

It includes over 30 kilometres of the highway.

No detour is available.
