A fatal car accident on Highway 1 west of Golden had the highway closed for several hours on Tuesday.

Shortly after noon, the Golden RCMP and BC Highway Patrol responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash about 20 kilometres east of the Rogers Pass Visitor Centre.

A red Jeep Cherokee, traveling east on Highway 1, failed to navigate a right-hand bend in the road and crossed the centre line before colliding with an on-coming westbound pickup truck, says a release.

The driver and sole occupant of the Jeep, a 44-year-old Golden resident, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pick-up truck sustained non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation continues and Mounties thank the public for their patience during the highway closure.
