Another lengthy full closure of Hwy 1 between Golden and Castle Junction begins today.

After being open for the Labour Day long weekend, the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) has seen intermittent closures east of Golden.

For just over a week, there were only an overnight closure from 10 pm until 7 am, along with 30-minute stoppages between 8-10 pm.

Closures ramped up on Sept. 15, as 30-minute stoppages started to take place between 9 am and 3 pm, and now another full closure of the highway starts today.

Starting at noon on Monday, Sept. 26, Hwy 1 will be closed between Golden and Castle Junction as work on phase four of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project ramps up for the fall.

This closure will last through Wednesday, Nov. 30, but the highway will fully reopen for the Thanksgiving long weekend.

While the highway is fully closed, travellers will have to rely on the standard detour through Radium Hot Springs.

That means 90 extra minutes of travel time using Hwy 93 and Hwy 95.

You can view the full closure schedule through the Kicking Horse Canyon Project website.
