Mounties in the BC Interior found time in their busy schedule this week to help a local elderly woman who was experiencing difficult times.
It all began when the Midway RCMP recently responded to a residence to provide assistance to emergency medical crews, who had to take the woman’s husband to the hospital.
On Wednesday, Jan. 20, one of the responding officers took it upon himself to return to the home to check on her well-being.
“The officer interrupted the elderly woman as she was in the process of breaking up household furniture to burn in the home’s wood burning stove for heat,” explained Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.
“That officer didn’t think twice and immediately rounded up the troops, who travelled into the back country to chop wood, which they sorted, split, delivered and stacked for the local elder.”
It was a wonderful act of kindness that these officers performed for no other reason than to provide assistance to a local in need.
O’Donaghey said that it’s easy to become isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic and many are unaware of the challenges that our neighbours, friends and even family may be facing in private.
“We hope this small act of kindness encourages other British Columbians to step up, reach out to those around them and help out where they can,” he said.
“This has highlighted the importance of working together and looking out for one another during these unprecedented times.”
The officers involved, Cst. Jonathan Stermscheg, Cst. Chris Hansen, PS Leanne McLaren and Cpl. Phil Peters, were commended by Supt. Brad Haugli, the RCMP Southeast District’s commander.
