RCMP phone lines have been restored across the British Columbia Interior after an unexpected outage overnight.

Detachments across the South East District – which includes the Okanagan, Kootenays, Kamloops and other areas – were affected.

A spokeswoman for the RCMP said in a press notice that TELUS had planned maintenance to its fibre network between 11 pm Thursday which was expected to conclude at 6 am Friday.

But, to the RCMP’s surprise, the outage affected all communities in the South East District as well as Daajing Giids, Smithers and New Aiyansh in the North District.

The public was still able to call the police but when they did they were re-routed through Prince George.

Just after 2 am, however, the phone lines were restored.
