Heavy rainfall is expected to hit the southern part of British Columbia over the next 24 hours, which has officials taking extra precautions.
Hwy 1 will close between Lytton and Spences Bridge at 4 pm today due to the risk of landslides after fires ravaged the area this summer.
The Province says northbound traffic will be redirected to Hwy 5 or Hwy 3, while southbound traffic will be diverted at Cache Creek.
“Debris flows are a post-fire hazard that can be triggered by intense rainfall. Additional provincial roads and highways may be affected by landslide events,” explained a statement from the Province.
“Drivers should expect to encounter debris along any burnt areas and are advised to plan alternative routes, as further closures may happen with limited notice.”
Motorists travelling through areas affected by wildfires are asked not to stop during rainfall events for their own safety and to ensure firefighting efforts or road maintenance aren’t impeded.
