While it’s essential traffic only for routes between the BC Interior and Lower Mainland, highways between the Thompson-Okanagan and Alberta remain business as usual.
However, driving conditions will be treacherous on some routes throughout the Interior as inclement weather moves into the region today and Friday.
Environment Canada (EC) has issued a winter storm warning for the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) between Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass, as well as Hwy 3 between Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass.
Both routes are expected to see around 30-40 centimetres of snow over the next 24 hours and change.
It already started on Hwy 1, with around 10 cm of snow falling at higher elevations on Wednesday night.
The weather alert explained that “a strong weather system will bring a long duration winter storm” to the region.
It added that “heavy snow will bring hazardous winter conditions” to both Hwy 1 and Hwy 3.
Highways are expected to become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow, EC said, and quickly-changing weather in the mountains can make driving conditions treacherous.
Motorists are reminded that BC’s winter tire regulations are in effect for both routes and anyone who is travelling is encouraged to check DriveBC before they depart.
