Emergency crews responded to a tragic fatal incident near Williams Lake over the weekend.

Mounties were called to Tyee Lake, north of Williams Lake, shortly after 5 pm on Saturday for a report of a UTV falling through the ice.

According to police, the UTV was driving on the lake when it broke through the ice and into the water.

Unfortunately, a “young child” died in the incident, an RCMP statement explained.

“As spring arrives and we see more and more warmer days, we would like to remind everyone to be aware of the rapidly changing conditions of ice on our area lakes and ponds,” the statement said.

“While the ice may look safe, as the mercury rises, the ice melts making it unsafe to be on.”

The Williams Lake RCMP is assisting the BC Coroners Service with the investigation into the child’s untimely death.

At this time, no further information will be released by police.
