Kelowna’s mayor, city councillors and health officials all received heaps of praise during BC’s COVID-19 update on Thursday.

Health minister Adrian Dix lauded the efforts of the city officials in response to the outbreak during the Canada Day long weekend, saying it will serve as a blueprint for other communities.

“I wanted to express our appreciation to Mayor Basran in Kelowna, who's team with the City of Kelowna really has done an outstanding job working with Interior Health,” said Dix.

“The mayor, members of council, the city, all of the leadership at Interior Health, people such as MLA Norm Letnick, came together with us and started talking about what needed to be done. All of the things that you see in Kelowna, I think they are a model of how we respond.

“We've actually seen in the past couple of weeks a significant decline in active cases in Interior Health."

Part of Kelowna's response included deploying a team of Safety Education Ambassadors at parks, beaches and other public spaces to encourage people to follow the health guidelines.

The teams have been recording summaries of their interactions with people and so far 70% of the interactions have been described as positive.

Those positive reactions could be translating to the region's declining daily case count.

Interior Health reported just one new case of COVID-19 between Wednesday and Thursday, with 18 active cases remaining in the region.
