Five retail cannabis stores are nearing the final municipal hurdle needed to open their doors in West Kelowna.

City council has given the green light to send rezoning applications for five separate store locations to an upcoming public hearing.

If successful in the public hearing, the applications will still have to obtain an operating permit from the provincial government.

The provincial government has provided no standard timeline for the permitting process.

In January, Lake Country city council approved its first retail cannabis store, however, that store is still awaiting provincial approval to open its doors.

Once approved by the province, successful applicants will have to purchase a $5,000 cannabis business license from the City of West Kelowna.
