After a long wait eight-month wait, the Okanagan is finally getting its first cannabis store.

On Monday, the BC government confirmed it has approved a retail license application for a cannabis store in Vernon.

The store will be operated by cannabis company Spiritleaf and located in Vernon’s north end at 102, 2500 53 Avenue.

Despite receiving the green light from the province, an actual opening date has yet to be released by Spiritleaf.

It was long believed that a Starbuds location in Lake Country would be the Okanagan's first cannabis store after it was approved by local government in December.

However, that process has been slow moving, leading its operators to express its displeasure with the province's lack of communication.

Kelowna city council has approved and forwarded 10 retail cannabis applications to the province, but has yet to receive word on when those will be approved.
