Gap between average price of legal and illegal cannabis widens: StatCan

The average price of legal cannabis increased in the fourth quarter of 2019 while the average price of illegal cannabis went down, according to Statistics Canada. 

Between October and December last year, the average cost of a gram of legal cannabis was $10.30 – up from $9.69 the previous year. 

Over the same period, illegal cannabis sold for an average of $5.73 per gram compared to $6.44 in 2018. 

The data were compiled using 248 price submissions. 

Legal cannabis is cheapest in Quebec, where it costs $7.88 on average for a gram. 

The most expensive legal cannabis is found in Alberta, where a gram costs, on average, $10.96.

In British Columbia, the average legal gram costs $9.32 while the average illegal gram costs $5.95.
