Environment Canada has placed the Okanagan under a severe thunderstorm watch.

The warning was issued early Sunday morning, as conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms with possible large hail and heavy rain. Environment Canada says that a line of thunderstorms will develop near noon with an upper disturbance moving over the region. The main threat will apparently be isolated heavy downpours, which could produce 15 to 25 mm within just one hour.

Watches are upgraded to warnings when severe thunderstorms are imminent.

Environment Canada reminds residents that fast moving water across a road could sweep away a vehicle. In addition, large hail can damage property and cause injury. You should be prepared for the severe weather and immediately take over if it approaches.

“Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” says Environment Canada. “Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!”

The severe thunderstorm watch has also been issued for the Shuswap and Boundary regions.
