The District of Lake Country has won a national public engagement award for improving its signage in the community.

It's the smallest municipality and the only one in Western Canada to receive the award.

The Dazzling Notice Awards program was created by Dave Meslin, a Toronto-based entrepreneur who gives recognition to   excellence in government outreach.

He challenges municipalities to resist apathy and to be intentionally inclusive. He stresses that government signage doesn't have to look dull and boring.

"Citizen engagement is an important part of inclusive decision-making," stated the award panel. "Residents can offer a local perspective, a diversity of circumstantial experience and creative solutions."

Mark Koch, Lake Country's district director, said the signage project inspired a goal to engage citizens in

conversation around the development of the community.

"We empowered two of our team members, Jocelyn Ratzlaff and AJ Taylor, to create something impactful,” said Koch.

In line with these goals, Lake Country Mayor James Baker, notes that “before our residents are able to engage, they must be informed – making these efforts to connect with our citizens especially important.”

The new signage aims to provide a bright and easy-to-read display. More signs will be phased in as inventory of the old signs runs out.

Other areas besides Lake Country receiving the award for 2017 include Brampton, Oakville and Toronto, Ont.
