It’s all hands on deck for the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) right now.
A number of proactive flood protection measures are being taken across the Central Okanagan in an effort to protect important infrastructure.
The mitigation projects involve both Parks Services and Environmental Services.
They’ve been approved and funded by Emergency Management BC in advance of the continued rise in the level of Okanagan Lake.
Here’s a comprehensive list of projects that are being done:
In the Central Okanagan West Electoral Area:
- Sandbagging will be done to protect the Killiney Beach water system intake and pump house.
- Killiney Beach Community Park is now partially open for public access to the beach and newly defined swim area (new swim buoys installed). The boat launch and former dock area remains closed due to last spring’s flood damage. Funding to implement repairs was recently approved and contracts have been issued to complete this work in the coming months.
- The pump house for the Westshore Estates water system does not require sandbagging or other protection at this time as it was not impacted by the record high lake water levels in 2017.
- Fintry Community Park (Access#1 – Boat Launch) will remain closed due to last spring’s flood damage. Funding to implement repairs was recently approved and contracts are being issued to complete this work in the coming months.
In the Central Okanagan East Electoral Area:
- Sandbagging intake infrastructure for the Falcon Ridge water system to avoid possible damage from high Mission Creek levels.
In the District of Lake Country:
- Erosion protection works are being installed along with sandbagging at Okanagan Centre Safe Harbour Regional Park.
In the City of Kelowna:
- Crews are wrapping up work to raise the level of the Mission Creek Greenway dike in five areas between KLO Road and Lakeshore Road.
- Sandbagging of the water intake pump house in Bertram Creek Regional Park.
- The access road into Mill Creek Regional Park has been raised as a flood protection measure for the adjacent residential subdivision. Funding to implement repairs from last year’s flood damage was recently approved and contracts have been issued to complete this work in the coming months.
In the City of West Kelowna:
- Sandbagging of heritage buildings and low lying areas along the foreshore in the Gellatly Nut Farm Regional Park.
- Erosion protection works are targeted for installation along the waterfront trail in Kalamoir Regional Park.
In the District of Peachland:
- Sandbagging of beach access locations at Antlers Beach Regional Park.
- Bridges over Deep (Peachland) Creek damaged or compromised in the flooding last year have been removed in Hardy Falls Regional Park to prevent possible damage from this spring’s runoff. Funding to implement repairs from last year’s flood damage was recently approved and contracts have been issued to complete this work in the coming months.
