Despite being only 14, Kelowna’s Jack Ross is wise beyond his years.

The highschool rapper’s new album Fake Faces serves as a thought piece on authenticity, or lack thereof, in today’s world.

“That title and the cover art show a lot of people wear masks in this world,” explained Ross.

“Whether it’s friends or whoever, sometimes people just don’t turn out to be who you thought they were.”

A musician from a young age, Ross initially discovered his lyrical voice through slam poetry in English class and took quickly to recording beats.

“I play some piano on my tracks but these songs are really a method to bring my messages to the world,” said Ross.

“I hope some of it gets retained, I want people to relate to it.”

The new album’s lead single “Enemies” has been entered into the national CBC Searchlight competition where it could potentially earn the chance to be on airwaves coast to coast.

“My age does turn heads sometimes,” laughed Ross.

“But Searchlight will give people the opportunity to hear my music and I hope it can be a type of medicine to at least a few listeners.”
