(Original Story: June 10 @ 12:15 pm): If you have followed NowMedia in recent years, you know that we’ve typically tracked Okanagan Lake levels throughout the spring.
It’s a simple process that gives residents, especially those in flood-prone areas along the lake and local creeks, an idea of the current flood risk.
To be honest, we were hesitant to start the lake levels story this year because the risk did not seem all that high during April and May.
Add that to the fact that there was virtually no flood risk over the past three springs and we figured that the public would be fine without the annual tracker this year.
But things have changed due to the delayed snowpack melt, as the Okanagan's snowpack was sitting at 153% of normal on June 1.
We’ve heard from our readers that the lake levels story is something they count on during these months.
So, with that being said, we are going to start tracking the lake levels daily through this story, which will be reposted every morning.
It will be updated daily with Okanagan Lake’s level as of 3 am that morning, as well as outflow numbers for Mission Creek, which will give an idea of how fast the snowpack is melting off.
Today, Okanagan Lake was sitting at 342.393 metres at 3 am, which is only 0.087 metres (8.7 centimetres) below full pool.
Mission Creek’s outflow numbers were measured at 41.4 cubic metres per second this morning, which is a fairly high number as Penticton dam manager Shaun Reimer tries to make room for the ongoing spring freshet.
