(UPDATE: Feb. 3 @ 6 am) - Hwy 5 reopened north of Kamloops late Thursday night.

The highway was closed for nearly 10 hours following a fatal collision just south of McLure.

A single northbound lane remained closed overnight for vehicle recovery. DriveBC promised an update on that minor closure at 8 am.

(UPDATE: Feb 2 @ 5:40 pm) - Hwy 5 is estimated to re-open at 8 pm, according to DriveBC.

In the meantime, a detour is available via Hwy 24 over to Hwy 97 and Hwy 1.

(UPDATE: Feb 2 @ 4:10 pm) - Hwy 5 remains closed in both directions after a fatal collision that occurred around 12:10 pm on Feb. 2.

One driver is dead and the other has been taken to hospital as a result of a crash involving two commercial vehicles on Hwy 5 near McLure.

The crash was attended by the Barriere RCMP Detachment, Collision Analyst Reconstruction Services (CARS) and BC Highway Patrol Kamloops Officers.

BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) has assumed conduct of the investigation, which is in the early stages.

There is no indication of any criminality as a contributing factor at this point in the investigation, according to the RCMP.

It is currently undetermined when Hwy 5 will reopen.

Any motorists who may have witnessed the collision are asked to call BCHP Kamloops at (250) 828-3111 and reference file # 23-458.

The shutdown is due to a crash around five kilometres south of McLure.

DriveBC says crews are on scene and an assessment is in progress.

However, there’s no estimate as to when the highway will reopen.

There is also no detour available at this time.
