British Columbia has lost a valuable search and rescue team member this week.

Kamloops Search and Rescue shared a post about the tragic death of search and rescue K9, Gertie, an eight-year-old German shepherd.

“Michelle lost her Shepherd Gertie yesterday in a very tragic accident. No words,” reads the KSAR post.

“All of us at KSAR want to express our sincere condolences to Michelle and her family.”

According to the post, Gertie was struck and killed by a hit and run driver.

The post explains that Gertie and her handler Michelle spent many days searching for a number of missing people in the BC Interior.

The two “logged many miles and hours” searching for Shannon White, Ryan Shtuka and Ben Tyner over the past few years.

“BC lost a valuable resource, Michelle and family along with many others lost a friend. Rest well Gertie,” finishes the post.
