Shell Canada has announced layoffs in northern Alberta as the company restructures in a changing marketplace.

The announcement was confirmed by Spokesperson Cameron Yost on Friday in an email to KelownaNow.com. Workers north of Fort McMurray at the Albian Sands project will be affected by the layoffs.
Shell Albian Sands consists of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project’s (AOSP) two mines, Muskeg River Mine and the Jackpine Mine. Up to 10 per cent of the 3,000 jobs at the AOSP mining operation will be given slips. But as Yost explains, the decision comes as part of an “ongoing effort to build a competitive oil sands business.”
“Those that are being affected will be considered for opportunities in other parts of Shell’s Canadian and global businesses – so not all of those folks affected will be leaving the company,” added Yost.
The Muskeg River Mine’s current production capacity is 155,000 barrels per day and the Jackpine mine is somewhat smaller, with capacity to produce 100,000 barrels per day. Shell is the operator and owner of 60 per cent of the Project, which encompasses its oil sands mining operations. The actual number of positions affected has yet to be determined.
