Wednesday, January 18th - The main pool has re-opened. More details here.

The main pool in the Parkinson Recreation Centre will remain closed on Monday.

The pool first closed on Sunday due to water clarity, and both swim lessons and aquatic fitness classes are cancelled for Monday afternoon. Any customers affect are to be contacted by Parkinson Recreation Centre staff, and the City says that refunds for the cancelled classes will be credited back to the customers' accounts.

The murky water does not pose a health issue, but officials say that is an issue for lifeguards who need clear water to do their job properly. “A mechanical issue with our filtration system has affected pool water clarity,” said Jim Gabriel, Divisional Director for Active Living and Culture. “Pool water clarity does not pose any health concerns for those who used the pool, but it does pose lifeguarding concerns. We’ve had to close the pool for swimmer safety.”

Currently, maintenance is working on the issue to fix it as soon as possible. There will not be a reopening time until the full mechanical inspection is finished. Any updates will be posted to KelownaNow and to the City's website. Swimmers can also call 250-469-8800.

This issue affects the main pool only, and the children's pool, the whirlpool, and the steam room are all still open.
