A local principal has been selected as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals, a proud distinction for the Central Okanagan School District.

Raquel Steen of Ecole KLO Middle School has been teaching in the education system for 25 years which includes two international teaching assignments. Steen joined the Central Okanagan School District in September 1995 as a French Immersion teacher at Kelowna Secondary School. Her teaching experience also includes positions at Mount Boucherie Secondary School, KLO Secondary School and KLO Middle School.

“Raquel Steen is a most worthy recipient of this award, which acknowledges her outstanding leadership in our schools. To be selected amongst only 40 school leaders being recognized throughout the Nation is a great tribute to her leadership,” said Superintendent of School, Hugh Gloster.

In November 2006 Steen received her first assignment as Vice Principal of Dr. Knox Middle School. In 2007 she was transferred to Ecole KLO Middle School where she remained as Vice Principal until June of 2010. She has been principal of the school since July 2010.

This is the 11th year of Canada’s Outstanding Principals program and this year 40 winners will join the more than 350 previous recipients. The award is an initiative of The Learning Partnership, a national charitable organization that has championed public education in Canada since 1993. More Central Okanagan School District Principals have received this award than any other District in Canada.

A gala dinner will take place in Toronto in February as the winners will be inducted into the National Academy of Principals.
