The Library Parkade expansion project will officially cost a little extra to complete, but it's not coming out of the taxpayers' wallet. Kelowna City Council approved a budget revision for the Library Parkade in the form of an additional $762,730 to be allocated to the project.

The funds will be transferred from the Ellis Parkade project, as the Library Parkade is a pressing priority with the summer months fast approaching.

The originally proposed funding amount was $6,237, 970, but was increased to $7,000, 700 in order to issue invitations to bid for the Library Parkade Expansion project.

The detail design for the Library Parkade expansion project is complete. The existing Parkade accommodates 471 vehicles and the expansion will provide an additional 197 vehicles for a total of 688.

An eastward extension to the existing Library Parkade will be developed in the open space adjacent to Ellis Street. Construction of the project will take approximately 14 months and is expected to be complete in June 2016.

“This is an important project to move our downtown forward,” said Mayor Colin Basran.

One concern brought up by Councillor Gail Given was that funds transferred for the Library Parkade project would leave the Ellis project short, however; the City Manager said that funding won't be an issue as the Ellis project is expecting additional revenue in 2015 to accommodate the project.
