The winners were announced Thursday night in Vancouver for the 12th annual Small Business BC Awards. Our local companies came out the best above 460 nominees from 70 communities across the province.

Best Concept went to Kelowna's own Soil Mate, a business that helps you find farms, markets, and wineries within a 100 mile radius. It helps people around the world, and it's more than a directory. Soil Mate shows you what's in season, tells you if a product is certified organic, and doesn't show anything that isn't available. So far, farmers, tourists, and everyday residents have been loving it.

Float Space, a Kelowna company that allows you to de-stress by floating in a saltwater isolation tank, won first for Best Emerging Entrepreneur. This award was handed out for the first time ever at the ceremony to recognize a young individual contributing to the social, cultural, and economic well-being of his or her community. At Float Space, you float weightlessly in a dark, soundproof environment for deep relaxation, getting positive effects such as stress reduction, muscle recovery, and enhanced creativity and clarity.

An Enderby business, Mel's Mainstreet Pizza & Pasta, won for Best Workplace.

"The competition between small businesses across British Columbia was especially tough this year. Congratulations to those who came out on top and to all competitors on their continued efforts to better our province," said Bill Adams, Vice-President, Western & Pacific, IBC.

The winners had to gain pubic votes to be shortlisted to the Top 10 and then submitted an application to show why they deserved to be honoured as one of B.C.'s best businesses. Once they got into the Top 5, all contestants had to face a Dragons' Den-style panel to pitch why they should be the winner.

A Small Business BC Award can be a launching point for a small business, creating recognition, awareness, and opportunities for exposure.

Kelowna companies did extremely well in the competition this year, with five making it to the Top 5 stage and seven getting to the Top 10
