If you can have all the amenities you need to live, do you necessarily need a big space to do it? That was the general question developer Shane Worman asked himself after a light-bulb moment influenced him to create a small housing unit in Kelowna's city centre.
Coined “mirco-suites,” the rezoning application for the low density multiple housing unit was approved during Monday's council meeting. Expected to encompass 24 micro units at approximately 320 square feet, Worman said the suites will be about the same size as your average hotel room with two queen size beds.
To be developed in a prime location, the proposed site on 2127 Ethel, at the corner of Glenwood, is within 100 metres of two bus stops, nearby the hospital, and close to a number of amenities in the Pandosy, Capri, and City Centre Urban Areas.
It's a great place to live, work, and play all in the same neighbourhood, added Worman.

We'll have full amenities in these mirco suites, said Worman. Everything from a washer and dryer to a standard size stove and oven, residents will have everything they'll need, they just won't have to share the space. A parking space will be available for every resident, however; Worman is hoping that people can live in this location without a vehicle if they'd prefer, seeing as it is centrally located.
“It's an affordable alternative for people who are looking for a newer place to live within reach of three city centres,” added Worman.
The micro-suites are perfect for elderly couples looking to downsize, students who are tired of putting up with their flate-mates and need an affordable alternative; as well as young couples and individuals who are looking to kick-start their careers in a fun neighbourhood. Albeit affordable and centrally located, Worman understands that living the mirco way isn't for everyone.
However, for those who would like to downsize, Worman said these mirco-suites will hopefully be rented out for under $700 per month.
Should everything move according to plan, Worman is hoping to break ground by mid summer and is eager to have people move in as early as Spring 2016.
