More condensed routes are coming for YLW, and officials are hoping that the new system will significantly help operations
This year, the Kelowna International Airport will be one of the first airports in the country to launch NAV CANADA’s public access to the satellite-based Required Navigation Performance (RNP) operational system. Currently, approach by planes at YLW is based on navigation with radio signals, but this new RNP system allows aircrafts to fly a specific 3D path.
The RNP system was originally developed to help planes navigate mountainous areas and airports without instrument landing systems. It was first flown in 1996, and there are no known RNP accidents to date. Basically, the system allows on-board performance monitoring and alerting. Through its self-monitoring, the system gives an alert if it’s not being accurate enough, and it gives a more predictable approach for aircrews.

The flight paths are therefore more accurate, being more reliable, repeatable, and predictable. The RNP also allows a continuous descent with less distance for its approach, meaning less fuel is consumed and emissions are reduced.
WestJet has been using RNP approaches for several years, and they say they saved 310,000 L of fuel and 396,000 m3 of CO2 using the system for YLW operations in 2013.
The RNP system will also help arrival efficiency, especially in poor weather conditions. It’s also especially good for the mountainous terrain around YLW, where the system can help aircrafts use lower altitudes as they approach. Since the aircraft will be on very low or idle thrust, there should also be reduced noise.

With the RNP system, the patterns of some aircraft approaches are changing as well. The airport is currently looking for community feedback, and you can ask any questions you have as well on the new flight paths. More information is available on the airport's website.
