Cigarette Butt Causes Kelowna Garage Fire

After improperly discarding a cigarette, a fire nearly burnt down a residential garage.

At approximately 11:14 a.m. on Thursday, the Kelowna Fire Department responded to a 911 report of a residential garage fire on Cridge Road.

Three engines, one rescue truck, one command vehicle, and one safety vehicle were at the scene along with 19 personnel.

Upon arriving at the scene, the Kelowna Fire Department found the resident of the home extinguishing the fire with a garden hose.

Luckily, the fire was contained to the exterior of the garage door and smoke was vented from the garage.

Three individuals were home at the time of the fire.

According to the Kelowna Fire Department, the cause of the fire was from a discarded cigarette in a planter pot.

The Fire Department would like to remind people that smoking materials are a cause of many fire. They recommend using a deep glass or metal ashtray to dispose of the ashes and butts.
