Kelowna City Council has now officially approved the name for the new Police Services Building to be constructed at the corner of Clement and Richter in Kelowna’s north end.

The building had to be named at this point in order for the signage to be designed. As a result, Council approved the formal name of “City of Kelowna Police Services”.

Councillor Ryan Donn questioned whether city staff had thought to acknowledge any specific police officer, such as the first Chief of Police, with the name of the building. Staff answered that though they considered names in that vein, they were considering the future in case Kelowna one day has a municipal police force instead of simply an RCMP detachment. The name “City of Kelowna Police Services” is meant to give some flexibility for that possibility.

The building will also have prominent bilingual RCMP signage to help people find the detachment.

The City of Kelowna Police Services building is slated for occupancy in 2017 with a total budget of $48 million.
