As a proactive measure, the City of Kelowna water utility will be implementing watering restrictions for all customers beginning on Tuesday, August 4th.

Moving forward, City of Kelowna utility customers will be under watering restrictions on an odd/even basis.

“The restrictions for Kelowna Water Utility support the provincial water conservation goals and will help prepare us for any future water restrictions that may be required should the drought conditions continue year over year,” said Kevin Van Vliet, Utility Services Manager. “Odd/even watering is also effective in reducing peak water demand, which helps decrease the stress on our water system as a whole.”

Properties with an address ending in an odd number can water on odd calendar days, and those with an even address number can water on even calendar days.

Automatic irrigation systems may run between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., while manual sprinklers and watering by hose may occur between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. or 6:00 p.m. and midnight on the scheduled odd/even day.

Watering restrictions will remain in place until September 30th, at which time the City will re-evaluate the need for restrictions.

On Tuesday, a level four drought was announced for much of the southern half of British Columbia. Drawing their resources from Okanagan Lake, the City of Kelowna Water Utility provides water for just over half of Kelowna’s population.
