Construction has officially begun for the new downtown hotel to be developed at the former Willow Inn site in Kelowna.

Demolition of the existing building on Water Street began on Monday as scheduled by Westcorp, the company behind the hotel. In February 2014, Westcorp submitted an application to the City of Kelowna for the development of a landmark boutique hotel at the corner of Queensway Avenue and Mill Street behind Kerry Park.

Just over a year ago, city council approved the development, and now that project is finally moving ahead. Westcorp Vice President Gail Temple said that the company has been working hard to draft a detailed design required for construction drawings.

“The target is to have site work underway by the end of year, with construction to commence shortly thereafter,” said Temple in an email statement.

Construction is expected to take two years, with the hotel opening slated for some time in 2017.
