Getting the cake into the building was an adventure in itself, but after tiresome nights and early mornings, the team behind the giant replica of UBCO campus cake delivered the nearly 200 pound masterpiece on time.
“We didn’t anticipate how difficult it would be to get up the stairs this morning. We couldn’t get it in the elevator, we couldn’t get it through the door to get it in the building, so it was really a true Cake Boss experience: we weren’t sure we we’re going to get the cake to the venue,” said a laughing Tracey Hawthorn, UBCO employee and cake organizer.
Designed to celebrate the university’s 100th anniversary, the four by six massive cake was unveiled on Thursday morning at the UBCO campus.
Chef and Culinary Director for Food Services at UBCO, Mathew Morazain, said he was on campus at about 4:00 a.m. to put the finishing touches on the giant cake.
The whole concept materialized about four months ago when a design team was tasked with snapping photos of all the buildings around campus, and about two weeks ago, the team set to work to actually assemble the cake.
Aside from the immense amount of detail put into the cake, including everything from students walking around to the different types of trees found on campus, Morazain said the cake is tasty too.
There’s even a gluten free part of the cake as well, added Morazain.
So how did a team comprised of staff, students, and faculty come together to conquer a virtually impossible feat?
“It’s amazing what you can do when you get a passionate group of people together. People said that this was impossible, so to actually overcome this truly what seemed impossible feat was an incredible experience,” said Hawthorn.
Cutting into the cake will be a bittersweet moment for the entire design team, but Hawthorn said she is looking forward to sharing the massive cake during a kick-off BBQ later Thursday afternoon.
“It was all about collaboration and getting people to have fun,” added Hawthorn.
As fun as the experience was, Hawthorn said she won’t be making another cake for the university’s 101st anniversary.
