A completely new type of housing is coming to Kelowna.

HONOMOBO is introducing innovative Modern Shipping Container Suites in the city at their pre-launch event April 7 at Third Space Coffee from 4-7 p.m., where they will be giving a virtual tour of their housing models.

Their open house, scheduled for early June, will show off a 528 square feet one-bedroom suite called H03.

HONOMOBO said their affordable and compact housing solution, will help address Kelowna’s desperate need for low cost housing.

With several hundred existing lots eligible for a carriage home, Kelowna’s mature neighborhoods are positioned to help with the current housing crisis.

“Building additional condos and developing more sprawling land is the traditional way to provide more housing, but utilizing existing lots is more environmentally sensitive, faster, and makes much better economic sense for the city and existing homeowners” said co-founder, Daniel Engelman, in a statement.

A HONOMOBO plug-and-play carriage suites are manufactured in B.C. from shipping containers and can be built in just weeks. In the end, the house is durable, energy efficient, and modern.

Their suites range from 352-640 square feet, including studio, one bedroom and two bedrooms suites.

The space could be used as an office, a studio, a vacation home and more, according to the company.

“Our concept is simple. Take a durable, readily available, and cost effective structure, the shipping container, and turn it into a sleek, beautiful living space,” continued Engelman. “We have embraced the essence and durability of the container while turning it into an extremely livable and modern home.”

The company also takes care of all the technical points and paperwork.

“We take a comprehensive approach to each customer’s unique property needs and with pre-manufactured modules, the process is predictable and simple,” explained Engelman.

Candace Hinz is HONOMOBO’s first Kelowna client. She said she is eagerly anticipating the arrival of her one bedroom HONOMOBO within the next 8-10 weeks.

“With my background being commercial construction, I can’t imagine a simpler build process and with upwards of $500 cash flow, this decision took little debate,” said Hinz, also in a statement.

The unit leverages existing land and infrastructure to create a cash positive investment while significantly increasing the property value. Properties that are eligible in Kelowna include RU6, RU1c, or RU2c.
