Okanagan residents are joining together and walking to support women and girls around the globe.

People will be tying their sneakers and walking 10,000 steps this Saturday in Kelowna. The walk, which is called Walk In Her Shoes Challenge, put on by CARE Canada seeks to cover the average distance many women and girls have to travel to fetch water and food.

“I truly believe in the power of women and girls to make the world a better place for all and so I am honoured to help bring this initiative to the Okanagan,” said Wendy Wright, a Kelowna resident, child advocate and volunteer organizer of Saturday’s event.

The walk is family and dog friendly and will take place at Mission Creek Park on Saturday morning.

Registration is $25 for adults, $10 for teenagers and kids walk free.

According to Care Canada women and girls in developing countries walk on average 10,000 steps every single day, which is the equivalent of walking from Rock Creek Highway to the Kelowna International Airport, just to get basic essentials. Walking this distance leaves little time for getting an education or earning an income.

Walk In Her Shoes is held annually in other communities like Vancouver and Calgary and finally it is coming to the Okanagan.
