The mayor of Kelowna isn’t going to let one hurtful comment get him down. Instead, he’s going to run with it and glam it up a little bit.

Colin Basran has accepted his nomination to transform into his drag persona for the first ever Surgarplum Ball.

Four rainbow crosswalks debuted in Kelowna last summer, but not everyone was happy about it. One resident called Basran “Mayor Sugarplum”, so Basran decided to go with it.

“Little did this person know that while they thought they were insulting me, I actually found it quite humorous and I was kind of flattered! My friends from the Okanagan Pride Society thought we could have some fun with it and with that, the Sugarplum Ball was born,” Basran explained on Facebook.

As part of the ball, the already stylish mayor will switch out his nice suits and fancy shoes for more of a feminine look.

Several of Kelowna’s local personalities will be joining Basran in getting a drag makeover. Included in the personalities are KelownaNow’s very own Vincent Jones and Csek Creative’s Valaura Vedan.

The ball will be a place for community members to join together in acceptance for a big bash. Each person taking part in the drag makeover will get glammed up by a professional and will make their grand debut at the ball. All proceeds from the event will go to support Okanagan Pride Society.

Guests are welcome to dress in drag for the event, but it’s not required.
