Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran is getting his 15 minutes of fame on an international stage thanks to a mention in a Twitter blog post.

The social media site celebrated its 10th birthday this year and for July 1 will spotlight Canadians using the platform in interesting ways.

On June 16, Basran hosted a Twitter town hall to hear residents’ concerns, comments and thoughts about the city’s future.

The mayor asked five questions, ranging from, “What do you love about living in Kelowna?” to “What challenges are facing our community?”

He was Tweeted back hundreds of responses in an hour, enough that the hashtag #ImagineKelowna was trending in Canada.

This must have gotten the attention of those behind the scenes at Twitter.

Basran was mentioned in their blog on Tuesday along with some other accounts which have made waves this year. The RM of Wood Buffalo’s account, which kept Fort MacMurray evacuees in the loop during the fire, was also mentioned. So was UBC’s new President Santa J. Ono, who has over 4,000 followers.
