Okanagan venues that want to broadcast the final Tragically Hip concert are being asked to come forward.
The Canadian Cancer Society is partnering with major venues across the country on Aug. 20, to host live screenings of The Tragically Hip’s last concert.
“We are encouraging venues in the Okanagan to consider partnering with the Society in order to broadcast the concert to fans of the Hip while raising critically needed funds for brain cancer research,” explained Lori Stevenson in a press release.
Mayor Colin Basran announced that Aug. 20, will be known as “Tragically Hip Day” in Kelowna.
“I just think that the Tragically Hip are Canadian music icons and I know there are a lot of Hip fans in Kelowna. These proclamations can be fun,” Basran told KelownaNow.
Gord Downie, the lead singer of The Tragically Hip, announced at the end of May that he had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.
The next day, on May 25, they announced tour dates for a cross-Canada tour. When tickets went on sale everyone quickly bought them, creating a public outrage over not being able to see the band one last time.
That’s when CBC decided to come to the rescue.
The CBC will be broadcasting the final concert live between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and the broadcaster is working with the Canadian Cancer Society to give rights to venues who want to screen the concert.
