We now know who had the lucky $500,000 lottery ticket from the July 23 Lotto 6/49 draw.

Kelowna’s Stuart Smithson is the city’s newest lottery winner as he said ‘yes’ to the Extra when purchasing his lottery ticket for the Saturday draw.

“Saying ‘yes’ is a routine for me,” laughed Smithson. “I had a co-worker who once had all four Extra numbers but she said ‘no’, and I took that lesson to heart!”

Smithson said he has felt a sense of charity since winning the lottery, telling BCLC he now wants to focus on philanthropic work to help make the world a better place.

“I feel motivated after winning the lottery,” exclaimed Smithson. “I can now tackle things like supporting refugees, or setting up a sustainable legacy fund.”

But before he sets off on his good deeds, Smithson said he plans to spend some time with his wife and celebrate their upcoming anniversary.

“The timing of this is perfect because August is our wedding anniversary,” smiled Smithson. “I’ll have a big celebration with my wife, and possibly take her on a trip to Ireland!”

The winning ticket was purchased at the Save on Foods on Cooper Road in Kelowna.
