On a day when youth was a dominant factor, Kelowna’s 40-something Carmelle Guidi-Swan scored one for the older set at the 34th annual Pushor Mitchell Kelowna Apple Triathlon on Sunday.

Guidi-Swan (40-44 age group), a veteran of the Apple and triathlon events around the world, finished second among the 99 women and 22nd overall among 266 co-ed participants in the Olympic-distance event with a time of two hours 24 minutes five seconds (2:24:05). That was less than six minutes behind the winner and 2016 TriBC champion, Lauren Babineau (25-29 age category) of Victoria (2:18:28).
A member of Okanagan Masters Swim Club, Guidi-Swan was third out of the water at Okanagan Lake’s Tugboat Bay after a 1.5-kilometre swim in a time of 23:57. She posted the fourth-best time among the women on the 40 km bike (1:12:01) and was fifth on the 10 km run with a clocking of 45:23.
Alanna Dyck (35-39) of Vancouver placed third overall among the women in 2:24:10.
The men’s Olympic-distance Apple and provincial title went to Shawn Wilyman (25-29) of Victoria, who led a contingent of 167 men with a time of 2:02:23. Carsten Lapointe of Vancouver (20-24) placed second in 2:04:50 while Dawson Creek’s Patrick Howell (25-29) finished third in 2:06:39.
Kelowna's Ryan King (25-29) finished fourth overall in 2:13:47. After placing 13th in the swim and 11th on the bike, King reeled in several competitors with a fifth-best run of 40:33.
Loris Paoletich placed second among Kelowna competitors with a sixth-place finish overall. He won the provincial championship in the men's 35-39 age group in a time of 2:15:31. Martin Courtenay finished third in the large group of Kelowna competitors with a 13th place overall finish. He was second in the 50-54 men's age group with a time of 2:18:48.
The sprint triathlon (750-metre swim, 20-km bike, 5-km run) saw 17-year-old Owen Harris of Kelowna finish second among the 126 men competing on Sunday. He posted a time of 1:05:33 while Thomas Brown (25-29) of Edmonton won the race with a clocking of 1:02:33. Third place went to Chad Reid (40-44) of Vancouver with a time of 1:06:14.
Kelowna Jessica Deglau (35-39) swam, cycled and ran to third place among the women in the sprint race, finishing in 1:11:19. Edmonton's Adeline Maunder (20-24) led the field of 183 with a time of 1:06:14, good for third overall in the co-ed standings. Alesha Miller (20-29) of Vernon crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 1:08:37.
The 2016 Apple doubled as the B.C. provincial championships and included just under 1,000 participants overall during the two days.
