The RCMP recruited a group of Kelowna teens to help hand out traffic tickets earlier this week - but many of those tickets were no doubt received with a smile.
Cst. Robyn Boffy, the RCMP’s school liaison officer, hit the street with students from the Kelowna Secondary School’s Leadership 11 class to issue a batch of positive tickets.
On Oct. 18, as part of National Teen Driver Safety Week, the group conducted an impromptu roadblock in the school’s parking lot to hand out the tickets to young drivers who were doing it right.
They gave the positive tickets to drivers making smart choices, like leaving their phone alone or wearing a seatbelt.
The tickets are part of a Parachute program aiming to reduce distracted driving. Those who got a ticket can enter a draw to win prizes from the group’s sponsors.
As part of the initiative, the leadership students scratched safety messages to their peers in chalk on the sidewalks. Some of those messages included, Drive Safe and Hands Free.
