There's been lots of talk over the past few weeks about Kelowna's downtown, and how our city's most vulnerable citizens are using it.
A week ago city council approved a bylaw making it illegal to sleep on Kelowna's sidewalks overnight. Many business owners supported the decision, while others gathered en masse in front of city hall to protest it.
Meanwhile, in the midst of a overdose crisis in the province, Interior Health is considering a safe injection site smack in the middle of downtown, on Leon Avenue.
Business owners seem to support the idea of such a site, but there are few, if any, who want it next to their business.
The Kelowna Chamber of Commerce has officially come out against the proposed site, calling on Interior Health to do more research and consultation before deciding on a location.
Chamber president Tom Dyas sat down with KelownaNow's Trevor Nichols and Alex Soloducha to give the chamber's perspective on safe injection sites, the sidewalk bylaw, and why downtown is so important to our city.
