A Kelowna built program, promoting home grown produce and supporting locals, celebrates it’s inaugural year with a feast fit for royalty with the help of a local winery.
The Start Fresh Project is a culinary and farm education program in Kelowna. Its main goal is to provide education to those that are currently unemployed to equip them with the skills needed to grow, distribute and prepare food for a growing consumer base.
In their first year, The Start Fresh Project has already hosted a number of classes that focus on cooking, nutrition, sustainable farming and helping those with dietary restrictions to expand their options. In addition to the classes they offer, The Start Fresh Project has also received half an acre of land from Bottega to begin work on an inner city garden.
The Bread Basket Feast will be taking place at Summerhill Winery on January 28th, 2017 as a way of celebrating their inaugural year success, as well as to help sustain and grow their programming. Guests can expect not only delicious wine and stunning views, but a hearty meal prepared by the talented chefs behind this project.
“The event is all about raising awareness for what we do,” said Michael Buffett, a member of the Start Fresh team. “In the spring we plan to keep growing our programs, which includes catering, so at this event, our team will be serving some of the dishes we plan to have on our menu.”
Tickets for the event cost $70 and proceeds from the evening will allow The Start Fresh Project to continue their work in educating and supporting our community. With the help of the funds raised at this event The Start Fresh Project plans to begin developing a set curriculum and certificate program for those wanting to pursue work in the food industry.
“This event and what we do is about inspiring people,” said Buffett. “It’s about inspiring people to understand the process of where their food comes from, how to grow their own food and how to make delicious meals. It’s about the love of food and a love of helping the community.”
