On February 18th  Niteo Africa,  a local non-profit organization, will be hosting it’s annual Stone Soup Fundraiser at Sandhill Winery and foodies will not want to miss out.

Niteo Africa is a local grassroots charity that has been active in Kelowna and runs exclusively by volunteers for the past 10 years.

“Niteo means to bloom, to blossom and to be bright. That is our dream for the children of the world, our work is based in East Africa where we do education projects, primarily in the area of literacy,” said the organization's executive director and founder, Karine Veldhoen.

2017 will be the organization's third annual Stone Soup Gala, and it’s shaping up to be quite the event, all based around the theme of literacy.

The gala itself is based off a children’s fable called “Stone Soup," a tale that shows that when everyone does what they can, amazing things can happen. However, that is not the only allusion to children’s literature.

There will also be a culinary competition unlike any other. Chef’s from the OCA and Okanagan College Culinary program will be creating their best dishes based on their favorite children’s story, and the attendees will be the judges.

Within the past 10 years of service, Niteo Africa has collected around 100 tons of books that have been the foundation for literacy centres and reading corners throughout Uganda and South Sudan. This gala will ensure these projects can continue to happen.

“I think the Stone Soup Gala is based on the notion that if every does what they can, we can ensure that children around the world can have a quality education.” said Veldhoen

Niteo Africa will also be pairing up with another local charity, Mamas for Mamas this Spring. The two organizations will be hosting a book drive to ensure that children in our own area will have access to books to read over the summer break.

The Stone Soup Gala takes place on Saturday, Feburary 18th, and tickets are available on Eventbrite.ca
