Helping someone with cancer is about so much more than chemo and radiation and one B.C. organization is working to give patients support in other areas of their life.

InspireHealth provides supportive care for people during and after standard cancer treatments by giving them emotional, physical and spiritual help.

Their clinicians offer nutrition advice, exercise therapy, stress management and counselling services.

Cancer rates are expected to go up 57% over the next 10 years in B.C. In total, two out of five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This means the number of people who need support through and following treatment is only increasing.

All of InspireHealth’s services and programs are completely free of charge to all members, but they are only partially funded Ministry of Health Cancer agency.  In order to sustain their service, they need to raise $1 million each year.

In 2016, they held their first ever InspireHealth Rain Walk in Vancouver, which generated $72,000 to support their cause. This is the first year that they will be holding the same event at all InspireHealth Centres, including Kelowna, Victoria and Vancouver.

The 2.5 km walk will raise funds for programs and services at InspireHealth Supportive Cancer Care.

In Kelowna, they are aiming to raise $20,000 for their programs and facilities to support individuals living with cancer, and their families.

Those interested can register for the walk online, seek out pledges and get their friends and family to sign up too.

“People can expect to have a great time!” said clinical counsellor Ashley Phillips. “This is a celebration of our community of patients and their families and friends.

“This event is uplifting, inspirational, and shows the resiliency of the human spirit.  InspireHealth empowers people to take an active role in their health - and that’s exactly what this event does.”

They will be offering free swag bags, healthy food and beverages and music. People will take in the beautiful walking loop before returning to the Rotary Centre for the Arts to win prizes.

The walk will be held on Sunday, March 12th, 2017 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Rotary Centre for the Arts in Kelowna.
