With salmon spawning season and the last harvest of local orchards happening, a few trails in Mission Creek Regional Park are set to close in anticipation of increased wildlife activity.
The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) said increased bear activity is common this time of year and reports of sightings of bears tend to increase.
As a result, a portion of the Soopallalooe and Kokanee trails upstream between the Kokanee Bridge and Cottonwood Bridge will be closed until further notice.

“Visitors are asked to obey signs and barricades indicating closures,” the RDCO said in a news release issued Tuesday afternoon.
People who visit Mission Creek are encouraged to travel in a group of four or more.
The RDCO says bears foraging for food or fishing in the creek may not hear humans so people are encouraged to make noise while on the trails that remain open.
People are also encouraged to keep dogs on leash and prevent them from chasing any wildlife.
“If you see a bear, remain calm, give it plenty of space and stay well away, ensuring it has a clear escape route,” the RDOC said.
If you suspect a bear poses an immediate threat to public safety, call the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP).
Residents are encouraged to report the location and other details through the RDCO’s website or by calling (250) 469-6232.
Besides walking the trails, Central Okanagan residents are also encouraged to secure their garbage and only place waste carts at the curb by 7 am to reduce human-bear conflicts.
